Nike and Special Olympics are teaming up to make sports more inclusive for young people with and without intellectual disabilities. Their new three-year partnership will focus on growing the Unified Sports program, which brings together athletes of all abilities on the same team.
The program will start in Oregon, where Nike is based, and expand to Berlin, Johannesburg, and Tokyo. The goal is to train coaches and provide better sports opportunities for young people worldwide. Nike’s Chief Impact Officer, Vanessa Garcia-Brito, says the partnership aims to use the success in Oregon as a model for other parts of the world.
The partnership will focus on four key areas:
- Updating coaching materials to better support athletes with intellectual disabilities
- Training more volunteer coaches to lead Unified Sports teams
- Encouraging more girls and young women to participate in sports
- Developing new training tools based on the experience of local coaches
The program has already started in Oregon, with Nike employees volunteering at the Special Olympics Oregon Summer Games. The goal is to recruit 600 new coaches in the four focus cities and improve training for the 118,000 current coaches who work with 176,000 athletes worldwide.

Coach Jamaal Goodlow from Parkrose High School says that coaching Unified Basketball has taught him the importance of creating an inclusive environment where all athletes feel respected and valued. Nike and Special Olympics believe that sports should be for everyone, and this partnership aims to make that a reality.
By working together, Nike and Special Olympics can make a positive impact on the lives of young people with intellectual disabilities and promote inclusion and acceptance in sports. The partnership is a step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for athletes of all abilities.
Some potential benefits of this partnership include:
- Increased opportunities for young people with intellectual disabilities to participate in sports
- Improved training for coaches to support athletes with intellectual disabilities
- Greater inclusivity and acceptance in sports
- More girls and young women participating in sports
- A positive impact on the lives of young people with intellectual disabilities.
Overall, the partnership between Nike and Special Olympics has the potential to make a significant difference in the lives of young people with intellectual disabilities and promote a more inclusive and supportive environment in sports.
