“Your disability doesn’t limit your dreams, it shapes your strength.” The heart of a new PBS documentary, The Ride Ahead, which follows the journey of 21-year-old Samuel Habib as he navigates the challenges of becoming an independent adult with a rare genetic condition.
Like many young people, Samuel wants to move out, start a career, and find love. However, his disability requires him to use a wheelchair and communication device, making everyday tasks more complicated. After graduating from school, Samuel felt lost and unsure of how to achieve his goals. “School made sense, but after graduating, I felt lost. No one teaches you how to be an adult, especially with a disability,” he says.
To find answers, Samuel co-directed The Ride Ahead with his father, Dan Habib. The documentary features Samuel’s conversations with successful disabled adults, including Judy Heumann, a leading voice in disability rights; Ali Stoker, a Tony Award-winning actor; and Maysoon Zayid, a comedian and disability advocate. These mentors share their honest experiences, offering valuable insights and advice.

Through their stories, Samuel learns about the importance of self-advocacy, perseverance, and community. His mentors speak candidly about the highs and lows of growing up with a disability, providing Samuel with a sense of belonging and understanding. “Because Samuel is part of the disability community, they were real with him – no sugarcoating,” says Dan Habib.
The Ride Ahead aims to inspire young people with disabilities to find their strength and believe in themselves. The documentary also seeks to educate the general public about ableism and promote inclusivity. By sharing Samuel’s journey, the film encourages viewers to see disability as a natural part of human experience, rather than a limitation. The documentary premieres this month on PBS, offering a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of disability, identity, and independence.
